Malbec . Mendoza . Argentina
Pairs with: Blue Cheese, Camembert, Cheddar.
The Finca la Florencia Malbec is a deep, rich purple colour.
The nose is intense and powerful, with red and black fruits showing well, there is violet, blackcurrant and damson. There is a hint pepper and spice here too.
The palate is velvety smooth, with soft, ripe tannins giving lovely structure and mouthfeel to the wine. There is more damson, currant, more spicy notes and a lingering, rich finish.
The Malbec grapes for the Finca la Florencia come from 100 year old, high altitude (950m above sea level) vineyards in Mendoza.
The grapes are carefully hand harvested in into 20kg boxes. The grapes are then sorted, pressed and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 25 days before spending 6 months ageing in second and third use French and American oak barrels.
The Cassone family first arrived in Argentina from Piedmont in the 19th century. Entrepreneur Roberto Cassone started making wine in the 1950s in very small quantities and passed down his knowledge and enthusiasm for wine to his son and current owner, Eduardo Cassone.
In 1998 Eduardo, together with his wife and sons, built a small winery in Mendoza with which they could fully exploit the old family vineyards. The majority of the vineyards are 90 years old and are located in the prime Drummond area of Luján de Cuyo in Southwest Mendoza, 950 metres above sea level.
The wines are fermented in their high-tech winery before ageing in French oak barrels. These are wonderful wines that marry modern freshness of fruit with structure and complexity.
